POW Fest is proud to present /Writing the Short Film Script/, a workshop with screenwriter and Professor Jackie Blain
What is a short film anyway? Is it all of /Star Wars/ in 10 minutes? Is it a simple /Kids in the Hall/ skit? Or is a short film its own unique art form, a glimpse into the moments that change how we feel about ourselves and the world we live in?
In fact, a short can be as epic, traditional or experimental as your imagination will allow. It can move people to belly laughs or tears, be all dialogue or contain no dialogue at all, be comprised of ideas or images or a magical combination of both. It’s an endlessly mutable, extremely shootable format that allows writers and filmmakers a very practical way to work on their craft /and /gain entrance into the festival circuit.
In /Writing the Short Film Script/, we’ll:
* Spend the morning looking at what makes a good narrative short.
We’ll watch a few short films, discuss what makes them work and
then develop a couple ideas and synopses as a class.
* Draft a script for a 3-5 page short film of your own.
* Share these scripts in a supportive environment so that you can
walk out of the class with a potentially shootable project.
If you’ve written for film before, come expand your ideas about what a short piece can do. If you’ve never written for production, come learn ho easy it is to script the short film. If you’re a filmmaker, come discover one of the best ways to get your work out in the world as quickly as possible.
We’ll have fun while we work hard, and you’ll leave with the skills (and a script) to create great short films.
